Tencent became the first Chinese technology company to reach a $500 billion market capitalization.
Tencent crossed the $500 billion valuation in November 2017 as investors responded to the scale of its gaming, social-media, payments, and digital-content businesses. The company was already one of China’s most important internet firms through WeChat, QQ, and a major global games portfolio.
Tencent’s milestone is sometimes confused with Alibaba’s later market-cap records. Both companies are Chinese technology leaders, but they have different origins: Tencent grew from communications and online entertainment, while Alibaba began with business-to-business e-commerce and developed into a broad commerce and cloud platform.
Tencent was founded in 1998 by Ma Huateng and several co-founders. WeChat launched in 2011 and became a major multi-purpose mobile platform. Market capitalization varies with the Hong Kong-listed company’s share price and is not the same as annual revenue.
