PetroChina became the first Chinese company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization during its 2007 initial public offering.
PetroChina is the publicly listed arm of China National Petroleum Corporation, one of China’s major state-owned energy groups. Its Shanghai listing in November 2007 attracted intense investor demand, and its opening valuation briefly exceeded $1 trillion.
The event was notable because it made PetroChina the world’s second company, after ExxonMobil at the time, to reach that valuation on a market debut. Its share price later fell substantially from the IPO peak, illustrating why a debut valuation and a sustained market capitalization are not the same thing.
PetroChina should not be confused with Sinopec, another major Chinese oil company. PetroChina’s main businesses include exploration, production, refining, chemicals, and petroleum marketing, linking its valuation closely to energy prices and China’s economic growth.
