Tencent became the first Chinese company to exceed a $500 billion market capitalization in 2017.
Tencent crossed the $500 billion threshold in November 2017 as its Hong Kong-listed shares rose sharply. The company’s growth was powered by online games, social platforms, digital advertising, and expanding payment services. Its WeChat platform became especially important to Tencent’s commercial ecosystem.
The milestone placed Tencent among the world’s most valuable publicly traded companies and made it the first Chinese company to join the $500 billion group. Alibaba later became another major Chinese technology company at a comparable scale.
Market-cap rankings can change quickly because Tencent’s shares trade in Hong Kong dollars and because exchange rates affect comparisons with U.S.-dollar valuations. The milestone also concerns Tencent’s listed equity value, not the combined value of every private or affiliated business associated with the company.
