Tesla became the first automotive manufacturer to surpass a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2021.
Tesla crossed the milestone on October 25, 2021, after its share price surged following news of a major vehicle order from Hertz. The order was widely reported as involving 100,000 electric vehicles, although the market value reflected expectations about Tesla’s broader growth rather than one contract alone.
Tesla’s valuation was driven by its electric cars, battery technology, charging network, software features, and expectations that electric vehicles would take a larger share of global transportation. Its market capitalization was far higher than that of many established automakers despite Tesla producing fewer vehicles at the time.
The milestone does not mean Tesla was the world’s largest automaker by production volume. Companies such as Toyota and Volkswagen generally produced more vehicles. Market value measures investors’ expectations about future earnings and growth, not simply current sales or factory output.
