Tesla reached a $1 trillion market capitalization in October 2021 after its shares surged during the electric-car boom.
Tesla briefly passed the $1 trillion threshold on October 25, 2021. The rise followed strong investor enthusiasm for electric vehicles and a large vehicle order from Hertz, which announced plans to buy 100,000 Tesla cars.
Tesla was unusual among automakers because investors valued it not only as a vehicle manufacturer but also as a potential leader in batteries, software, charging, and autonomous-driving technology. Market capitalization measures investor expectations as well as current profits.
Tesla’s milestone did not mean that it had the largest sales volume among automakers. Traditional manufacturers such as Toyota and Volkswagen sold many more vehicles in several periods, while Tesla commanded a much higher valuation relative to its production because of its expected growth.
