Tesla became the first automobile maker to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in October 2021.
Tesla crossed the $1 trillion valuation threshold on October 25, 2021, after its share price rose sharply following news of a major vehicle order. The milestone made Tesla the first automaker to join the trillion-dollar market-cap group, although its valuation was far above the sales-based valuations of traditional car manufacturers.
Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning founded Tesla Motors in 2003, and Elon Musk joined as an early investor and became chairman. The company’s Roadster, Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y helped establish its identity as an electric-vehicle manufacturer. Investors also valued its battery technology, software, charging network, and expected growth.
Market capitalization measures investor expectations, not the number of vehicles sold or the company’s physical assets. Tesla’s record is therefore a stock-market milestone. Toyota, Volkswagen, and BYD are major competitors, but they did not become the first automaker to reach this particular valuation.
