Which company became the first automaker to exceed a $1 trillion market cap in 2021?

The story behind the answer

Tesla became the first automaker to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2021.

Tesla crossed the threshold in October 2021 after its share price climbed following news that Hertz had ordered 100,000 electric vehicles. The company’s valuation reflected expectations for rapid electric-vehicle adoption, future production growth and its position as the best-known pure electric-car manufacturer.

Tesla’s milestone was notable because traditional automakers generally generated much larger vehicle volumes but were valued more conservatively by investors. Tesla’s market value therefore represented expectations about future earnings as well as its existing sales.

Market-cap rankings are not production rankings. Toyota, Volkswagen and other manufacturers have historically built more vehicles in many years, but Tesla became the first automaker to pass the $1 trillion equity-value mark.
