Meta Platforms adopted its corporate name in 2021 to emphasize its focus on building the metaverse.
Facebook announced the change to Meta Platforms on October 28, 2021. The Facebook social network kept its existing name, while the parent company adopted Meta to signal a broader strategy involving virtual and augmented reality, digital social spaces, and related hardware.
Meta’s major platforms include Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Its Reality Labs division develops products such as Quest virtual-reality headsets, while its Family of Apps division remains the company’s principal source of revenue.
The rebrand did not create a new company from scratch. Meta Platforms is the same corporate group formerly known as Facebook, Inc. The change also differed from a stock-market relisting: Meta continued trading under the ticker symbol META after changing from FB.
