Broadcom announced its agreement to buy VMware in May 2022, and the transaction closed on November 22, 2023. The deal combined Broadcom's semiconductor and infrastructure-software operations with VMware's virtualization and enterprise-cloud technologies.
Broadcom was founded as a semiconductor company and became known for chips used in networking, broadband, storage, and wireless communications. Its corporate history includes the 2016 acquisition of the original Broadcom Corporation by Avago Technologies; the combined company adopted the Broadcom name.
VMware was founded in 1998 and helped popularize x86 server virtualization. A common mix-up is treating VMware as only a hardware company: its best-known products are software platforms that allow multiple virtual machines to run on one physical computer.
