Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware on November 22, 2023, in a transaction valued at approximately $69 billion. VMware was known for virtualization software that lets organizations run multiple virtual machines on shared physical hardware.
The deal expanded Broadcom's infrastructure-software business beyond its established semiconductor operations. Broadcom had previously grown through acquisitions, including its purchase of CA Technologies in 2018 and Symantec's enterprise-security business in 2019.
Broadcom is distinct from the original Broadcom Corporation, which was acquired by Avago Technologies in 2016. Avago adopted the Broadcom name after that transaction, creating the modern Broadcom Inc.
