Broadcom completed the acquisition of VMware on November 22, 2023. The transaction expanded Broadcom’s infrastructure-software business and added VMware’s virtualization and private-cloud technologies to its portfolio.
VMware was known for software that lets organizations run multiple virtual machines on a single physical server. Virtualization became a foundational technology for data centers and cloud infrastructure, making VMware strategically significant beyond its familiar desktop and server products.
Broadcom is a major semiconductor and infrastructure-software company. It is not the same company as the older Broadcom Corporation, which was acquired by Avago Technologies in 2016; Avago adopted the Broadcom name after that transaction. The VMware purchase was structured as a cash-and-stock deal and was one of the largest technology acquisitions of 2023.
