Broadcom acquired VMware in 2023 in a deal that strengthened its position among major semiconductor firms.
Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware on November 22, 2023, after receiving regulatory approvals in multiple jurisdictions. The transaction was valued at approximately US$69 billion and combined Broadcom’s semiconductor operations with VMware’s enterprise virtualization and cloud software business.
Broadcom’s roots include the semiconductor businesses associated with Avago Technologies. Avago acquired Broadcom Corporation in 2016 and adopted the Broadcom name. The enlarged company supplies chips and connectivity components used in networking, broadband, storage, wireless communications, and data centers.
The VMware purchase broadened Broadcom beyond hardware. Its market capitalization has also benefited from investor interest in infrastructure software and demand for components used in artificial-intelligence data centers. Broadcom is distinct from the earlier Broadcom Corporation, which was acquired and absorbed into the current company.
