Broadcom acquired VMware for about $69 billion in 2023 and is known for networking and semiconductor products.
Broadcom Inc. was formed in 2016 when Avago Technologies acquired Broadcom Corporation and adopted the Broadcom name. Its products are used in data-center networking, broadband communications, wireless connectivity, storage, and industrial applications.
The VMware acquisition expanded Broadcom’s software business beyond semiconductors. The transaction closed on November 22, 2023, after regulatory reviews in several jurisdictions. VMware’s virtualization and private-cloud technologies became part of Broadcom’s infrastructure-software segment.
Broadcom is sometimes confused with Broadcom Corporation, the earlier company that Avago purchased. The current Broadcom Inc. is the post-merger entity, while Broadcom Corporation was an older semiconductor company founded in 1991. It is also separate from Qualcomm, another major chip designer with a strong wireless business.
