Which company acquired the South Korean online marketplace Gmarket in 2009?

The story behind the answer

eBay acquired the South Korean online marketplace Gmarket in 2009.

Gmarket was founded in South Korea and became one of the country’s major online shopping platforms. Its marketplace model connected consumers with many independent merchants selling products across categories such as electronics, fashion, beauty, and household goods.

eBay purchased a controlling stake in Gmarket in 2009. The acquisition strengthened eBay’s position in South Korea, where it already operated Internet Auction, another major online marketplace. Gmarket and Internet Auction subsequently became important parts of eBay’s Korean operations.

Gmarket is sometimes confused with Coupang because both are prominent South Korean e-commerce names. They are different companies with different origins: Gmarket grew as a marketplace and was acquired by eBay, while Coupang was founded separately and developed its own logistics-focused retail model.
