Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems in 2010, bringing Java and MySQL into its portfolio.
Oracle announced its agreement to acquire Sun Microsystems in April 2009, and the transaction was completed in January 2010 after regulatory review. Sun had developed or owned influential technologies including the Java programming language, the Solaris operating system, and the MySQL database.
The acquisition strengthened Oracle’s ability to provide integrated hardware and software systems. Oracle subsequently became responsible for the commercial development and stewardship of Java, while MySQL remained an important open-source database project under Oracle’s ownership.
The deal is sometimes confused with Oracle’s later acquisitions of PeopleSoft, Siebel Systems, or NetSuite. Those transactions expanded Oracle’s enterprise software business, whereas the Sun purchase added a major hardware company and prominent developer technologies.
