Dell acquired EMC in 2016, creating Dell Technologies. The transaction was announced in October 2015 and completed on September 7, 2016, in a deal valued at about $67 billion.
Dell was a major personal-computer and enterprise-hardware company founded by Michael Dell. EMC specialized in data storage and also owned a controlling interest in VMware. The combination was designed to give Dell a broader portfolio spanning computers, servers, storage, virtualization and related enterprise technologies.
After the deal, Dell Technologies became the parent company for businesses including Dell, EMC and VMware. VMware remained a separately traded company for a period before Dell Technologies later spun it off to shareholders in 2021.
The transaction is sometimes described simply as the “Dell–EMC merger,” although legally Dell used a special acquisition structure. It was one of the largest technology-industry deals ever announced at the time, exceeding many earlier hardware mergers in value.
