Wanda Sykes voices Stella, the sassy and insecure striped skunk in the 2006 animated film Over the Hedge. Stella is one of the woodland animals drawn into a frantic raid on a suburban neighborhood after a hedge separates them from their normal food supply.
In the film, Stella is short-tempered, outspoken, and initially wary of the group’s schemes. Her character’s comic confidence contrasts with her insecurity, especially as the story gives her a romantic subplot involving the skunk-like feline Tiger. Sykes’s distinctive comedic timing helps make Stella one of the film’s most memorable supporting characters.
Over the Hedge was produced by DreamWorks Animation and directed by Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick. Its ensemble cast also includes Bruce Willis as the raccoon RJ, Garry Shandling as the turtle Verne, Steve Carell as Hammy the squirrel, and Nick Nolte as Vincent the bear.
A common mix-up is confusing Stella with Heather, the opossum voiced by Avril Lavigne. Stella is the striped skunk, and Wanda Sykes is her original English-language voice performer.
