Robert Klein starred in HBO’s first comedy special, An Evening with Robert Klein, in 1975.
The special was an important early moment for HBO, which had launched as a subscription television network in 1972. At a time when stand-up was usually seen in clubs, variety programs, or occasional network broadcasts, a dedicated comedy special gave a comedian room for a longer and more focused performance.
Klein was already an established comic before the HBO program. He had performed with Chicago’s Second City troupe, appeared on The Tonight Show, and built a reputation for observational and political humor. His HBO appearance helped establish the network as a significant home for televised stand-up.
The special is sometimes confused with later HBO programs by George Carlin, Richard Pryor, or other major comics. Those performers became central to HBO’s comedy history, but Robert Klein’s 1975 program is generally identified as the network’s first comedy special.
