The special was filmed at New York City’s Beacon Theatre in November 2011 and released independently online in December of that year. Louis C.K. sold it directly through his website for $5, an approach that attracted major attention because it allowed viewers to buy and download the special without a traditional television or distribution deal.
The performance combined observational material with discussions of aging, parenting, technology, death, and everyday behavior. Its direct-sales success became an influential example of a comedian using the internet to distribute a filmed stand-up performance.
