Ali Wong released the 2016 Netflix stand-up special Baby Cobra.
The special was filmed at The Neptune Theatre in Seattle while Wong was seven months pregnant. That pregnancy became part of the performance’s distinctive subject matter, alongside marriage, ambition, sex, and motherhood. Netflix released Baby Cobra on 19 May 2016.
The special helped make Wong a major international comedy star and introduced many viewers to her sharply personal, highly physical performance style. It also became an important example of a stand-up special built around a comedian’s specific life stage rather than a generic collection of jokes.
Baby Cobra is sometimes confused with Wong’s later Netflix special Hard Knock Wife, which was released in 2018 and was filmed during another pregnancy. The two specials are related in style and subject, but they are separate releases.
