Yellow became strongly associated with McDonald’s restaurants through its Golden Arches branding.
The arches were designed as highly visible yellow architectural features on early McDonald’s buildings. Their bright color helped the restaurants stand out to motorists and made the structures recognizable from a distance. This practical roadside function became an important part of the brand’s visual identity.
When the arches were transformed into a graphic logo, their yellow color remained central. The combination of the curved M shape and vivid yellow created a simple symbol that could be recognized quickly on signs, packaging, advertisements, and restaurant uniforms.
McDonald’s later introduced additional colors and design systems, including red backgrounds and more varied contemporary restaurant palettes. Those changes did not erase the historic association between the company and yellow arches. The color is also why the phrase “Golden Arches” became a common nickname for McDonald’s itself, even though the logo is formally a stylized pair of arches.
