Which club won the first NRL premiership, in the 1998 season?

The story behind the answer

The Brisbane Broncos won the first NRL premiership in the 1998 season.

Brisbane defeated the Canterbury Bulldogs 38–12 in the 1998 grand final at the Sydney Football Stadium. The match was the first grand final of the National Rugby League, created in 1998 after the Australian Super League war and the subsequent merger of rival competitions.

The Broncos were coached by Wayne Bennett and captained by Kevin Walters. Their victory gave Brisbane its third premiership, following titles in 1992 and 1993 under the former Australian Rugby League competition. The 1998 final remains notable for its one-sided score and Brisbane’s strong second-half performance.

The Melbourne Storm did not yet exist in 1998; they entered the competition in 1998 but did not reach that season’s grand final. The NRL’s first premiership should also be separated from the first premierships of predecessor competitions.
