Arsenal won the first match of the 2026–27 Premier League season.
The champions opened their title defence at home against Coventry City on Friday 21 August 2026. Arsenal won 3–0, making them the first club to collect a victory in the new Premier League campaign.
The fixture attracted attention because Coventry had just returned to the top flight after a long absence, while Arsenal entered the season as defending champions. It was also the first competitive league match of the campaign, before the Saturday, Sunday and Monday fixtures followed.
A common mix-up is to identify Hull City as the first winner because Hull played the first Saturday lunchtime fixture and also won. However, Arsenal’s Friday match came earlier in the schedule. Manchester City and Chelsea also won during the opening round, but neither played in the season’s first match.
