Which club won the 1989 NSWRL Grand Final?

The story behind the answer

Canberra Raiders won the 1989 NSWRL Grand Final.

Canberra defeated Balmain Tigers 19–14 after extra time at the Sydney Football Stadium on 24 September 1989. It was the Raiders’ first premiership and the first title won by a club from outside New South Wales’ traditional metropolitan strongholds.

The match became famous for its dramatic finish. Canberra recovered from a difficult position and won through a field goal by John Ferguson in extra time, followed by a decisive try from Steve Jackson. The contest is frequently ranked among the greatest grand finals in Australian rugby league history.

Canberra entered the competition in 1982 alongside the Illawarra Steelers and became a major force later in that decade. The club went on to reach the 1990 and 1991 grand finals, winning the latter as well, but the 1989 title remains its breakthrough premiership.
