Which club won its first 2026–27 Premier League match 2–1 against Sunderland?

The story behind the answer

Ipswich Town won its first 2026–27 Premier League match 2–1 against Sunderland.

The match took place at Portman Road on Saturday 22 August 2026. Ipswich were returning to the Premier League after one season away, while Sunderland were also among the division’s promoted clubs.

Ipswich took the lead through Emersonn, who scored in his first competitive match for the club. Sunderland equalised through Nilson Angulo, but Ipswich secured victory when substitute Jack Clarke scored in the 90th minute against his former club.

The win was Ipswich’s first Matchweek 1 top-flight victory since the 1993–94 season. That historical detail makes the result more significant than an ordinary opening-day win. The match should not be confused with Hull City’s 2–0 victory over Manchester United, another success for a promoted side on the same Saturday.
