Which club has won the UEFA Champions League the most times?

The story behind the answer

Real Madrid has won the UEFA Champions League and European Cup more times than any other club, with 15 titles.

Real Madrid won the inaugural European Cup in 1956 and then dominated the competition’s first era, lifting the trophy in each of the first five finals from 1956 through 1960. The club later added titles in 1966, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2022, before reaching 15 with its 2024 triumph.

The competition was renamed the UEFA Champions League in 1992, but official historical records combine the European Cup and Champions League eras. That is why Real Madrid’s total includes titles won before the modern name existed.

AC Milan is second with seven titles, while Liverpool and Bayern Munich have six each. Barcelona has five. A frequent mistake is to count only Champions League-era trophies, which leaves out Real Madrid’s foundational European Cup dominance.
