South Sydney won its first premiership in 1908, the inaugural season of the New South Wales competition. The club then dominated the early decades, particularly during the 1920s and 1950s. Its most recent premiership came in 2014, when the Rabbitohs defeated the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 30–6.

The Rabbitohs were excluded from the top competition after the 1999 season but returned in 2002 following a legal and public campaign.
