Which club has won the most La Liga titles?
Answer
Real Madrid
Answer
Real Madrid
Real Madrid has won the most La Liga titles.
Real Madrid leads Spain’s top-flight championship roll of honour with 36 La Liga titles. The club’s first league triumph came in the 1931–32 season, when it also retained the championship in 1932–33. Those early victories began a record that has stretched across nearly every era of Spanish football.
The club’s dominant periods include the 1960s, when it won eight championships, and the late 1980s, when it captured five consecutive titles from 1985–86 through 1989–90. Its later championships added to a lead over Barcelona, the second-most successful club in the competition.
La Liga began in 1929 with ten teams. The competition was suspended from 1936 to 1939 during the Spanish Civil War, but its title count resumes with the postwar seasons. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao are also notable for never being relegated from Spain’s top division. Valencia and Atlético Madrid are major clubs, but neither has matched Real Madrid’s league total.
