Arsenal entered the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend as defending champion.
The club began its title defence at home against Coventry City on 21 August 2026. That match was also the first game of the new Premier League season, placing the champions at the centre of the opening-weekend schedule.
Arsenal’s status followed their 2025–26 league triumph, which ended a long wait for another English top-flight title. Their opening-round victory over Coventry meant the champions immediately collected three points in the new campaign.
Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea were also prominent clubs in the first round, but none held the defending-champion status. Liverpool played Newcastle United, Manchester City hosted Bournemouth, and Chelsea visited Fulham.
