The match took place at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 23 August 2026. It was scheduled for a 14:00 kick-off, alongside Brighton & Hove Albion versus Aston Villa, another Sunday fixture.
Bournemouth scored first and led for much of the match, but Manchester City recovered to win 2–1. Marcus Tavernier put Bournemouth ahead before City turned the game around late in the second half.
The result was one of three Sunday matches in the opening round. Newcastle United versus Liverpool followed later that afternoon, while Fulham versus Chelsea completed the round on Monday evening.
