Which club did Liverpool visit in its opening match of the 2026–27 Premier League season?

The story behind the answer

Liverpool visited Newcastle United in its opening match of the 2026–27 Premier League season.

The fixture was scheduled for Sunday 23 August 2026 at St James’ Park. It was the third and final Premier League match scheduled for that Sunday, following the simultaneous Manchester City–Bournemouth and Brighton–Aston Villa fixtures.

Newcastle’s home ground, St James’ Park, was listed with a capacity of 52,729 for the season. Liverpool’s opening-day trip was one of the most prominent fixtures in the first match round because both clubs were established Premier League sides.

The opening weekend concluded the next day with Fulham hosting Chelsea. Liverpool’s first opponent was therefore Newcastle United, rather than one of the three newly promoted clubs: Coventry City, Ipswich Town, or Hull City.
