Ipswich Town beat Sunderland in its first Premier League game back during the 2026–27 opening weekend.
Ipswich Town won the match 2–1 at home on Saturday, 22 August 2026. The fixture was notable because Ipswich were returning to the Premier League, while Sunderland were also beginning a new top-flight campaign after promotion.
The Premier League’s fixture announcement described the match as Ipswich’s first game back in the division. Ipswich had spent the previous season outside the top flight, so the opening-round fixture immediately tested the club against another newly promoted side.
The result should not be confused with Hull City’s opening victory over Manchester United. Hull also won on the first Saturday, but by a 2–0 scoreline. Sunderland’s defeat was instead part of a 2–1 match at Ipswich’s home ground, Portman Road.
