Ipswich Town beat Sunderland in its 2026–27 Premier League opening match.
Ipswich won 2–1 at home on Saturday 22 August 2026. The result gave the promoted club three points in its first match of the new Premier League campaign and made Ipswich one of two newly promoted teams to win on opening weekend.
Sunderland were also beginning the season as a promoted club, so the match was an all-promoted-team meeting. That made it one of the clearest tests of how the returning Championship sides would fare against each other at the higher level.
The other promoted-club matches produced contrasting outcomes. Hull City defeated Manchester United 2–0, while Coventry City lost 3–0 to defending champions Arsenal. Ipswich’s 2–1 victory therefore contributed to a strong overall opening round for two of the three promoted teams.
