Which club did Arsenal play in the first match of the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend?

The story behind the answer

Arsenal played Coventry City in the first match of the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.

The fixture took place at Emirates Stadium on Friday 21 August 2026. Arsenal were beginning their title defence, having won the previous Premier League championship, while Coventry City were returning to the top flight after being promoted from the Championship.

Arsenal won the opening match 3–0. The result gave the champions an immediate winning start and made Coventry the first newly promoted side to face Arsenal that season.

Coventry, Ipswich Town and Hull City were the three promoted clubs in the 2026–27 Premier League. Because all three appeared in opening-weekend fixtures, they are easy to mix up: Ipswich hosted Sunderland, Hull hosted Manchester United, and Coventry travelled to Arsenal. The first match, however, was specifically Arsenal against Coventry.
