Which club, along with Real Madrid and Barcelona, has never been relegated from La Liga? Athletic Bilbao. The Basque club is one of only three teams to have remained in Spain’s top division continuously since La Liga began in 1929.

Athletic Bilbao, Real Madrid and Barcelona were all founding members of the Primera División. While many historically prominent Spanish clubs have spent seasons in Segunda División, this trio has never finished a La Liga campaign in a relegation place or dropped out of the division.

Athletic’s record is especially notable because the club has maintained a distinctive recruitment tradition. It is famous for developing and fielding players from the Basque Country and nearby areas, while continuing to compete at the highest level against clubs with broader international recruitment.

The club’s name is often written Athletic Club in English and Athletic Bilbao in common international usage. It should not be confused with Atlético Madrid, which has been relegated in its history. Valencia and Sevilla are also major La Liga clubs, but neither shares Athletic’s uninterrupted top-flight record.
