Dell Technologies acquired EMC in 2016 for approximately $67 billion.
EMC Corporation was a major provider of data-storage systems and enterprise information technology. Its best-known subsidiary was VMware, a leader in virtualization software. Dell, meanwhile, was a major personal-computer maker that had expanded into servers and enterprise hardware.
The transaction combined Dell with EMC and created Dell Technologies. VMware remained a publicly traded company with a separate ownership structure after the deal, although Dell Technologies became its majority owner.
This acquisition is often described as the largest technology-sector deal at the time. It should not be confused with Dell's 2013 privatization, which took Dell private, or Broadcom's later acquisition of VMware, announced in 2022 and completed in 2023.
