Nagasaki was the target of the second atomic bomb used in World War II on August 9, 1945.
The U.S. B-29 bomber Bockscar carried the plutonium bomb code-named Fat Man from Tinian. Kokura was the primary target, but clouds and smoke obscured the city, so the crew diverted to Nagasaki, the secondary target.
The bomb exploded over Nagasaki's Urakami Valley at about 11:02 a.m. local time. The attack caused immense destruction and loss of life, although the city's hilly terrain limited the blast's spread compared with flatter Hiroshima.
Nagasaki was the second and, to date, last city attacked with a nuclear weapon in wartime. Hiroshima had been bombed three days earlier, on August 6, with the uranium bomb Little Boy. Japan announced its acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration on August 15, and the formal surrender followed on September 2.
