The surrender ceremony aboard USS Missouri officially concluded at 9:25 a.m. on September 2, 1945.
The ceremony began shortly after 9 a.m. in Tokyo Bay. Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu signed at 9:04 a.m., and General Yoshijiro Umezu signed at 9:06 a.m. Douglas MacArthur signed at 9:08 a.m. as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers.
Allied representatives then signed in sequence. Chester Nimitz represented the United States, followed by representatives of China, Britain, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. After the signatures were complete, MacArthur delivered concluding remarks.
The 9:25 a.m. time marks the close of the ceremony and the point at which the war was officially regarded as over. It differs from the earlier surrender announcement heard in Japan on August 15 and from the times at which individual delegates signed the document.
