Which city was divided by the Berlin Wall?

The city divided by the Berlin Wall was Berlin. From 1961 to 1989, the wall separated West Berlin from East Berlin and also enclosed West Berlin within East Germany.

After the Second World War, Berlin was divided into American, British, French, and Soviet sectors, even though the city lay inside the Soviet occupation zone. Political tensions gradually turned the city into a central Cold War fault line. East Germany built the wall beginning on 13 August 1961 to stop people leaving for the West.

The barrier was not simply a single concrete wall. It included fences, watchtowers, patrol roads, lighting, and a guarded strip known as the death strip. It divided neighbourhoods, streets, transport routes, and families across Berlin.

The border opened on 9 November 1989 after growing public pressure and confusion over new travel rules. Demolition followed, and German reunification took place on 3 October 1990. Budapest, Prague, and Vienna were important Cold War-era cities, but none was divided by the Berlin Wall.
