Which city is the largest city on the shore of Lake Superior?
Answer
Thunder Bay
Answer
Thunder Bay
Thunder Bay is the largest city on the shore of Lake Superior.
Thunder Bay is in northwestern Ontario, Canada, at the head of the lake’s western arm. The modern city was created in 1970 through the amalgamation of the cities of Fort William and Port Arthur, along with nearby townships. Its harbour became an important grain-shipping centre because railways connected the Canadian Prairies with Lake Superior.
Duluth, Minnesota, is another major Lake Superior port and is often named in comparisons because it is a prominent U.S. city at the lake’s western end. However, Thunder Bay is the largest lakeside city by population. Sault Ste. Marie is also an important city near the lake’s eastern outlet, but it is smaller.
The city’s waterfront, port, and access to wilderness make it an important regional centre. Nearby Sleeping Giant Provincial Park is a well-known landmark on the lake’s northern shore.
