Shopify is headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
The company began in Ottawa after Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake created an online snowboard store and built software to power it. Rather than relying on an existing platform, they developed tools that eventually became Shopify, a service allowing merchants to create and manage online stores.
Shopify’s headquarters location is sometimes confused with Toronto or Vancouver because the company operates internationally and has offices in several cities. Ottawa is the company’s Canadian home and the city associated with its founding. Shopify later expanded from small-business storefronts into payments, point-of-sale tools, shipping features, and enterprise commerce services.
