Which city is Malaysia's federal administrative capital?

The story behind the answer

Putrajaya is Malaysia’s federal administrative capital and the seat of the federal government.

The planned city was developed to relieve overcrowding and congestion in Kuala Lumpur. Government offices began moving from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya in 1999, and the city formally became Malaysia’s third federal territory on February 1, 2001. It was designed as a purpose-built administrative centre between Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Putrajaya’s architecture, broad boulevards, landscaped parks, and lake reflect its vision as both a garden city and an efficient government hub. Major institutions, including the Prime Minister’s Office and federal ministries, are concentrated there. Its name honours Malaysia’s first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.

Kuala Lumpur remains Malaysia’s constitutional and national capital, as well as its main commercial and financial centre. That distinction explains why both cities may appear in capital-related questions: Kuala Lumpur is the national capital, while Putrajaya is the administrative capital.
