Bratislava is the only national capital bordering two sovereign countries by land.
Slovakia’s capital lies in the country’s southwest, where its territory reaches both Austria and Hungary. The city occupies both banks of the Danube and also touches the River Morava near the Austrian border, giving it an unusually international geographic position.
Bratislava’s border distinction is sometimes misunderstood because the city is part of Slovakia itself; it borders two other sovereign states, not two countries in addition to its own. City-states such as Singapore can have maritime borders with multiple countries, but Bratislava is generally identified as the only national capital with land borders with two other sovereign states.
The city’s location has shaped its history. It was known as Pressburg in German and Pozsony in Hungarian, served as the coronation city of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1536 to 1783, and became the capital of the Slovak Republic in 1993. Vienna is only about 50 kilometers away.
