Which city is home to the Prophet’s Mosque, one of Islam’s three holiest mosques?

The story behind the answer

Medina is home to the Prophet’s Mosque, Al-Masjid an-Nabawi.

The mosque was established by Muhammad in Medina after the Hijra, the migration from Mecca in 622 CE. It is traditionally regarded as the second-holiest mosque in Islam, after Al-Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and before Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

The mosque expanded substantially over the centuries and now contains the Green Dome, commonly associated with the burial place of Muhammad. The mosque’s history also reflects Medina’s central role in the formation of the early Muslim community.

Medina is not the destination of the obligatory hajj itself; hajj is centered on Mecca and the surrounding pilgrimage sites. Many pilgrims nevertheless visit Medina before or after hajj as a separate devotional journey.
