Which city is home to the Petronas Twin Towers?

The story behind the answer

Kuala Lumpur is the Malaysian city home to the Petronas Twin Towers. The paired skyscrapers stand in the city’s Kuala Lumpur City Centre, or KLCC, and are among Malaysia’s most recognisable landmarks.

Designed by Argentine-American architect Cesar Pelli, the towers use geometric forms inspired partly by Islamic art. Each tower has 88 storeys, and the buildings are linked by a famous skybridge between the 41st and 42nd floors. Their total architectural height is 451.9 metres, including the distinctive spires.

Construction began in 1993, and the towers were officially opened on August 31, 1999, Malaysia’s National Day. From 1998 to 2004, they were the tallest buildings in the world, before Taipei 101 took that title. They remain the world’s tallest twin skyscrapers.

A common mistake is to answer “Malaysia,” which is the country rather than the requested city. Another is confusing the towers with Kuala Lumpur Tower, a separate communications and observation structure nearby. Merdeka 118 later became Malaysia’s tallest building, but it does not replace the Petronas Towers as the city’s iconic twin-tower landmark.
