Which city is home to Canterbury Cathedral?

The story behind the answer

Which city is home to Canterbury Cathedral? Canterbury Cathedral is in Canterbury, England.

The cathedral stands in Canterbury, a historic city in Kent in southeastern England. Its formal name is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the senior bishop of the Church of England and a symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion.

The church’s Christian foundation dates to 597, when Augustine of Canterbury established a cathedral after arriving on a mission associated with the conversion of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. The building was destroyed by fire in 1067 and rebuilt from 1070 under the Norman archbishop Lanfranc. Much of the east end was later reconstructed in the Gothic style after another major fire in 1174.

Canterbury became one of medieval Europe’s most important pilgrimage destinations after Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the cathedral in 1170. A frequent mix-up is treating Canterbury as a London cathedral; it is roughly southeast of London, but the cathedral itself is in Canterbury, Kent.
