The answer is 332 steps: 332 steps lead to the platform of Strasbourg Cathedral’s spire.
The climb ends at a viewing platform about 66 metres above the ground, not at the summit of the spire itself. Visitors reach it by a stone spiral staircase and can look across Strasbourg, the Alsace Plain, the Vosges and, in clear weather, Germany’s Black Forest.
Strasbourg Cathedral is famous for its single soaring spire, completed in 1439. Medieval plans called for two west-front towers, but only the northern tower and spire were built. The platform occupies the area between the tower and the spire, alongside the historic guard house.
A common mix-up is to confuse the platform with the top of the spire: the 332-step route reaches the accessible terrace, while the spire above is not a normal visitor climb. Some modern visitor notices round the count to about 330, but 332 is the traditional published figure for the full ascent.
