Edinburgh hosts the annual Hogmanay street party on Princes Street in Scotland.
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is one of Scotland’s best-known New Year celebrations. Its program has included a large street party in the city center, concerts, torchlight processions, and a midnight fireworks display viewed against Edinburgh Castle and the surrounding Old Town skyline.
The word Hogmanay refers to the Scottish New Year celebration itself, not exclusively to one event venue. Modern Edinburgh festivities developed into a major organized festival during the late twentieth century, attracting visitors from Scotland and abroad.
People sometimes use Hogmanay as if it were simply another name for a fireworks show. In Scottish custom, however, it covers a broader group of traditions, including visiting friends after midnight and first-footing, in which the first person to enter a home in the new year is associated with good fortune.
