Which city hosted Thomas Edison’s main laboratory after he left Menlo Park?

The story behind the answer

West Orange hosted Thomas Edison’s main laboratory after he left Menlo Park.

Edison established his West Orange laboratory complex in New Jersey in 1887. The site was designed for large-scale research and development and included specialized buildings, workshops, libraries, and manufacturing facilities. It became the center of Edison’s later work across electricity, sound recording, motion pictures, batteries, and other technologies.

West Orange is sometimes confused with Menlo Park, the earlier laboratory site that made Edison internationally famous during the 1870s. Menlo Park was in a different New Jersey location and represented an earlier phase of his career.

The West Orange complex is now preserved as part of Thomas Edison National Historical Park. Its surviving buildings document how Edison’s invention process increasingly depended on teams and industrial infrastructure.
