How many children did Thomas Edison have?

The story behind the answer

Thomas Edison had six children.

Edison had three children with his first wife, Mary Stilwell, and three with his second wife, Mina Miller. His children with Mary were Marion Estelle, Thomas Alva Edison Jr., and William Leslie. His children with Mina were Madeleine, Charles, and Theodore Miller Edison.

The total can be confusing because some accounts emphasize only the children who survived into adulthood or mention the two separate marriages without listing every child. Edison’s son Thomas Jr. also used the name “Dash,” while Charles later became president of the Edison companies and served as governor of New Jersey.

The six children connected Edison’s private family history with his public industrial legacy. Several family members were involved in business, politics, or efforts to preserve and manage the Edison name after his death in 1931.
